So who is right? Well, there is no right or wrong but the truth appears to be different than it was years ago. The newer definition by the urban dictionary suggests that the word is gender specific thus perhaps not a fair description. Also don’t go all crazy on me and remind me that the urban dictionary relies on reader descriptions as we know that and that is sort of the point. Anyway the real issue here is that the term slutty has undergone a transformation that has somewhat changed the definition.
Another urban dictionary definition is as follows: Likes to expound upon her sexual prowess and conquests....with either gender.
Pretends to befriend one only to gain insider information to then disseminate to any and all within phone line distance.
Steals alleged friends' boyfriends.
Attention whore. (Self-professed, no less!)
Whore who doesn't expect payment.
You decide where the differences lay and what differences they may make. The point here is that slutty is not the same slutty of days gone by. The term is more accepted, less judgmental and more having to do with non sexual behavior than before. And perhaps most important lingerie is now slutty and that is a good thing or at least a more accepted thing.
Slutty lingerie is not quite the same non slanderous word as sexy or naughty or flirty but it is definitely going in that direction. The term is less of a put down as it is a realization of certain behavior or of a state of mind. This fact could be argued but what is not arguable is that words and their meaning change over time. This flexibility is what makes a language viable and useful. Words often need to change and that has happened to the word slutty. No matter what your understanding of the word slutty may be it has undergone something of a metamorphosis, from a worm into a butterfly. Perhaps it is that using the term over and over makes it less offensive. At one time calling a woman a bitch was offensive. Now, to many, the term is still offensive but it is used so frequently it has lost some of its sting, particularly to the younger generations who have not grown up with the stigma of the word. Curse words have a certain stigma or sting attached to them otherwise they wouldn't be curse words.
