The wearing of gloves was more frequently done in the past where formal events occurred and wearing a pair of gloves was expected. The gloves completed the look as in a long formal dress or gown and a pair of appropriately long gloves left little of her body showing but she did look elegant and the gloves were a significant part of that look.
Today there are a lot of different styles of gloves from fishnet short gloves to gloves with no fingers, short satin gloves and lace gloves. Many dance troupes required gloves for certain dances that suggest the wearing of gloves for a look that helps define the dance or the dancers. Many cheerleading or spirit groups in high schools and colleges demand that their girls wear gloves although that may also have to keeping the girls warm during cooler fall nights where they are performing in the evenings. Some gothic events suggest or require the use of vinyl or wet look gloves that have a very dark and foreboding look to them and add to the drama of their outfits. The look is a throw back to times in the past where either these gloves were worn or Hollywood has dramatized the look to the point where people associate the wearing of black gloves with the character or scenario.
While the wearing of gloves has seen its heyday, there are still a lot of used for these ornaments. Many gatherings that feature a southern element require white lace gloves as a feminine, pristine look that only lace can give. Whatever the reason we applaud the use of gloves as it still has a place in our society even if only for make believe.
